Jesus wants us to make sitting at His feet in order to know Him intimately our top priority in life.
What should be our top priority in life? Sitting at Jesus' feet. He wants our doing for Him to grow out of the passion and love that fill us when we sit at His feet. Your prayer should not be give me grace and strength to actually do that. No, grace and strength have already been given. Our prayer should be, "Jesus, mold my will that I choose to sit at Your feet."
Part of maturing in the Lord is learning to give up some good things in order to do things that are better. Our relationship with Jesus will be flexible--not burdensome but delightful. If you sit at God's feet and relax in His love, you will be able to absorb new truths in order to carry them out. If our level of intimacy with Him is solid and we are secure in His acceptance, we will not be overwhelmed or distraught by His loving correction but will welcome it.
Jesus knows that as we sit at His feet, receiving His forgiveness, grace and acceptance, we will learn to see our world through His perspective. We will share His heart of compassion for those around us.
"Martha, Martha, you are worried about many things. Come, be with me." Martha felt overworked and under-appreciated. She ran to Jesus with her complaint but what she was really wanting was His attention and His appreciation. Sometimes, we want to serve Jesus--and others--on our terms. A good work alone is not enough; it is the light of Jesus in the good work that gives it lasting, life-changing value.
Why is sitting at Jesus' feet so hard? We fear what He might ask. As we trust our Love, Jesus Christ, we must be willing to become vulnerable to Him and do any new work He has for us. He may encourage you to take a step forward into unfamiliar territory because He wants your relationship with Him to grow deeper. But as His Spirit draws you closer and closer, you will find you never fear His asking you to do something on your own. He will always equip you for the task. "Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass." (1 Thess. 5:24) If Jesus asks you to do something for His glory that threatens you momentarily, keep listening and trusting. He has gone before you, He has been there and He will be with you as you obey.
However, no matter how strong our passion is for Jesus, we are prime candidates for depression and anxiety when we are worn out physically and emotionally. The devil waits patiently for us to come to this point and pounces knowing how vulnerable we are. But Jesus is always there saying, "Come, arise, eat your fill." He will help us persevere in times when we are at His feet. He will cause you to come with great anticipation to these times of His presence.
Are you willing to move out of your comfort zone to please your Love, Jesus Christ? Are your actions motivated by a love for Jesus from times of sitting at His feet?
My prayer this week is that in the busyness of crazy work weeks that we would have a calm assurance remembering that we are KNOWN and so LOVED by Jesus, that our actions would be motivated by that love. Holy Spirit, come invade our hearts this day, October 8, 2012. Come Lord Jesus come.
