Living on Mission

An excerpt from a journal entry I wrote on July 25, 2012:

Living on mission. What does that even mean? Is the Gospel advancing? What does that look like for my life?  These are biblical terms I grew up hearing but I know for sure one thing--my life revolves around my selfish wants and not about bringing glory to God. Currently, my daily concerns revolve around thinking if my boss thinks I'm doing a good job, having the desire to be married one day, if my friends and others think I'm fun and relevant.  I'm constantly worrying about myself and my agenda.  The kingdom is not advancing as it should be in my life.

Fast forward to present day, September 9, 2012.  Whew, God has taught me so much even in the last few months.  What does living on mission mean? I, by no means am an example of always living like this but what I've come to find is that living on mission means you go to the emergency room all night to be with a coworker that is in need, it means going to the funeral for the granddaughter of a person you just recently met but who needs a comforting hand to hold, or simply it means strategically going to the coffee shop on a Tuesday night because you know Kevin and Lisa are working and you'll have an opportunity to build those relationships.  If you knew me growing up, you would remember me as the kid that shyed away from others and was forced to engage in conversation when I rather would have just sat in the corner.  As an adult, I still don't find it enjoyable engaging with strangers but I know that my life is about bringing the most glory to God so that means I smile and talk to my neighbors when I'd rather just head straight to the door.  It means waking up each morning and strategically thinking about my day, the places l'll go, the streets I'll drive, the people I'll see and think how can I place myself where I can be on mission and glorify God most in those places. It means giving up the godforsaken worship of COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE!  Yes, our culture doesn't make it easy on us.  But then again, Jesus' actions were so counter cultural.  It's not easy.  It's not always fun. And it's rarely convenient. But man oh man Jesus promises to show up and when you get a dose of that, you realize that "the convenient life" is the farthest thing from what you want if it means you don't have Jesus.

So I have to challenge you and myself as we enter into a new week..how can you take your day-to-day going to work, eating a meal, getting coffee in the breakroom, working out, driving home, and strategically place yourself where you can be on mission? (Romans 12) Maybe you don't know what that answer looks like.  Ask God.  He'll tell you.  Ask for opportunities to serve.  He'll give you them.  Ask for a greater awareness of how the Holy Spirit can work through You to bear fruit.  He'll show up.  So again, really ponder…how are you living on mission and what are the things that are keeping you from doing that?

Happy Sunday all.  Go live on mission this week.

A Place to Call Home: Reflections on Loneliness

...but as servants of God...unknown yet well known 2 Corinthians 6:4-10 excerpt I often wonder what life must have been like for the apostle Paul. He endured countless obstacles and consistent persecution but I find that as I read about his life he counted the cost and had an unexplainable joy deep in the fabric of his heart and nothing could take that away. How is that he could live in such miserable physical conditions and battle loneliness, not just being alone but being misunderstood and unknown by men. The only answer is Jesus. Jesus was his example because that is the life Jesus lived on earth and called His followers to.  Recently, I've found myself in a place of feeling unknown to those around me. I've been many places overseas and all around America. I've lived in third world nations and seen extreme poverty and I've lived in America with extreme material riches. Why is that when I lived in places of material poverty, I found more joy and a closeness ...

Pruned for a Purpose

If you don't regularly journal, I would highly recommend it.  Granted, I process things best by getting them on paper but it's always great to look back and see where you've come from. I feel that I'm at a crossroads in my life.  I'm excited for my future, wherever God might take me and I'm finally able to see the big picture of the last few years. This crazy adventure began in May 2009 in a dirty San Diego hostel talking to a Swiss man about theology and the meaning of life.  That conversation wrecked me.  I realized at that point I had been running on self-righteousness and empty words.  I was confused and wondering who God was and my relation to Him and what the heck this life was about.  I feared telling others that I had questions and doubts.  Thank God for good friends.  Around this time, I talked with my friend Frick. Frick had been praying for me and felt God saying a few things to me.  I wrote down his exact words. "It will ge...

Abide in Me

I'm in a season where I've lived a little life but still have a long journey ahead. I see people in my life farther down the road that I aspire to be like. I have questions like how have you stayed faithful to the call on your life for 40 years? How do you continue to fight for your spouse day after day, especially on days when you don't feel like it? How do you trust God when things are out of your control and the situation looks hopeless? It could seem like the answers to these questions should be quite complex but what I have been learning is that the answer is simple: abide in Jesus. What does abide mean?  : to endure without yield, to remain stable, fixed, to continue in a place and pay the price, to remain steadfast and faithful So how does one abide day after day? It's easy on days when the spotlight is on you, when the breakthrough comes, and when circumstances seem to go your way. But to abide means to remain steadfast through each and every day. On ...
